引/pronunciation in and hi/mean pull

How to study

How to Remember

When you study the Japanese Kanji, "引"

You should study before 引.

(yumi) means bow.

引 looks like a bow and arrow right?

Actually this Kanji is from the shape of "A person drawing a bow" in hieroglyph.

But remembering "bow and arrow" is easier.

Bow and arrow are stuff for drawing. : 引(hi)く, pull

In Use

We don't use only 引. This Kanji is always with other Kanji or Hiragana.

When you use 引 with other Kanji, The pronunciation is "in" or "hi"

引力(inryoku) 引率(insotsu) 引用(inyou) 引退(intai) 引導(indou)

When you use 引 with Hiragana, The pronunciation is "hi"

を引く。 I draw a bow.  or this is one of proverb that means "disobey"

ロープを引く。I pull a rope.
