When you study the Japanese Kanji, "川".

You can imagine 川 from the image of water flowing easily.

There is one more Kanji that means river.

It's "河". The pronunciations are almost the same.

But We usually use this Kanji for a big river.

 

In Use

When you use only 川, The pronunciation is "kawa"

 

When you use 川 with other Kanji, The pronunciation is "kawa," "sen," "o," or "ka," "gawa"

河川(kasen) 川岸(kawagisi) 川上(kawakami) 小川(ogawa)

 

When you use 川 with Hiragana, The pronunciation is "kawa"

川で泳(oyo)ぐ。I swim in the river.

魚(sakana)を釣(tsu)りに川へ行く。 I go to the river for fishing.
