When you study the Japanese Kanji, "男".

You should think to separate (ta,den) and (Chikara,ryoku).

means rice paddy and means power.

 

Long ago in Japan we had a culture where most men worked outside and women worked inside.

Men gave power to rice plants: otoko,男

 

In Use

When you use only  男, The pronunciation is "otoko" You can see the sign using only 男 at the bathroom and the Onsen.

 

When you use 男 with other Kanji, The pronunciation is "dan" or "nan" sometimes "otoko"

男性(dansei) 男子(danshi) 長男(chounan) 美男(binan) 男前(otokomae)

 

When you use 男 with Hiragana, The pronunciation is "otoko"

昨日(kinou)、近(chikaku)くの公園(kouen)で不審(hushin)な男を見(mi)た。I saw a suspicious man in a nearby park yesterday.

隣(tonari)に住(su)んでる男の人(hito)に助(tasu)けてもらいました。I got help from a man who lives next door.
