When you study the Japanese Kanji, "押".

You should study 手 and 甲 before 押.

手(te) means hand.   押 uses 手 as "Hen" in this case.

甲(kou) means hard.

 

押 is from "place your hand over the object and press it down"

 

In Use

We don't use only 押. This Kanji is always with other Kanji or Hiragana.

 

When you use 押 with other Kanji, The pronunciation is "ou"

押印(inryoku) 押収(insotsu)

 

When you use 押 with Hiragana, The pronunciation is "o"

ボタンを押す。I push a button.

彼(kare)はいつも私(watashi)の背中(senaka)を押してくれる。He always encourages me to try it.
