止/pronunciation shi and to/mean stop

How to study

How to Remember

When you study the Japanese Kanji, "止"

Actually this Kanji is from shape of footprint in hieroglyph.

But it can't imagine this Kanji from the hieroglyph.

So I'd like you to imagine a parent and child stop at a crosswalk. And the parent makes the child stop with parent's arm.

In use

Nobody uses this kanji alone normally, It might be used for a kind of sign.

When you use 止 with other Kanji, The pronunciation is "shi"

禁止(kinshi) 制止(seishi) 中止(chushi) 停止(teishi) 防止(boushi)

When you use 止 with Hiragana, The pronunciation is "to"

息(iki)を止める。hold one's breath

彼(kare)は、地図(chizu)を見(mi)る為(tame)に公園(kouen)で立(ta)ち止まった。He stopped at the park to look at the map.
