When you study the Japanese Kanji, "少"

You should study 小 before 少.

小 means small.

I heard 少 from 小 and 一 :This isn't a hyphen, this is the number one

It puts together "Only one" and "small" to "little"

In Use

When you use only 少, The pronunciation is "shyou"

 

When you use 少 with other Kanji, The pronunciation is "shyou"

少量(shyouryou) 希少(kishyou) 減少(genshyou) 少数(shyousuu) 年少(nenshyou)

 

When you use 少 with Hiragana, The pronunciation is "suku" and "suko"

このイベントの予算(yosan)はとても少(suku)ない。The budget for this event is very small.

少(suko)しだけ休(yasu)ませてください。Please let me rest for a while.
