How to Remember

When you study the Japanese Kanji, "手".

You can imagine 手 from the shape of a hand easily.

This Kanji is super important.

I will explain at "Useful Knowledge" in this page.

 

In Use

When you use only 手, The pronunciation is "te"

 

When you use 手 with other Kanji, The pronunciation is "shu" or "te".

選手(senshu) 握手(akushu) 助手(joshu) 空手(karate)

 

When you use 手 with Hiragana, The pronunciation is "te"

手に取(to)る。 pick up

手を挙(a)げる。 raise one's hand

 

Useful Knowledge

If you memorize 手, It will help you study a lot of Kanji.

A lot of Kanji use 手 as one of their parts.

拳(kobushi) (fist)

挙(a)げる (raise)

掌(shou) (palm)

 

This Kanji can also be the left side part another Kanji.

This "left side part" is named "Hen".

We say "Te-Hen" for this "Hen".

There is one more Kanji from hand shape.

That's 又(mata). It means "or".
