How to Remember

When you study the Japanese Kanji, "土".

 

This Kanji is from a shape of a hieroglyph.

Long ago people made a pedestal and they put soil on the pedestal.

They worshipped the pedestal as the God of the ground.

The pedestal looks like

 

In Use

When you use only 土, The pronunciation is "tsuchi"

 

When you use 土 with other Kanji, The pronunciation is "do" and "to".

土曜日(doyoubi) 土地(tochi) 郷土(kyoudo) 土台(dodai)

 

When you use 土 with Hiragana, The pronunciation is "tsuchi"

トラックで土を運(hako)ぶ。  I transport soil by truck.

If you memorize 土, It will help you study a lot of Kanji.

A lot of Kanji use 土 as one of their parts.

This Kanji can also be the left side part another Kanji.

This "left side part" is named "Hen".

We say "tsuchi-Hen" for this "Hen".
