How to Remember

When you study the Japanese Kanji, "弓".

You can imagine 弓 from the shape of a bow easily.

This Kanji doesn't contain an arrow.

An arrow is "矢"(ya).

In Use

When you use only 弓, The pronunciation is "yumi"

When you use 弓 with other Kanji, The pronunciation is "kyuu" or "yumi".

弓矢(yumiya) 弓道(kyuudou)

When you use 弓 with Hiragana, The pronunciation is "yumi"

弓を射る。 I shoot a bow.

弓を引く。 I draw a bow.  or this is one of proverb that means "disobey"

 

Useful Knowledge

If you memorize 弓, It will help you study a lot of Kanji.

 

A lot of Kanji use 弓 as one of their parts.

弱(yowa)い (weak)

弔(tomura)う (mourn)

弟(otouto) (younger brother)

 

This Kanji can also be the left side part another Kanji.

This "left side part" is named "Hen".

We say "Yumi-Hen" for this "Hen".
